The Half Moon, Herne Hill
This iconic London pub has been refurbished and brought back to life with the addition of some beautiful bedrooms and distinctive decor. Revivalist supplied a range of tables, chairs, cabinets, shelves and bric-a-brac for this fantastic project.
The Half Moon was built in the 1890s and it is one of those pubs for which the word legendary doesn’t quite cover it. Aside from hosting thousands of bands you’ve never heard of the likes of U2, the Police and Van Morrison played the back room whilst Frank Sinatra once gave an impromptu performance in the bar, oh, and Dylan Thomas was regular.
By the time it closed due to flooding in 2013 the old pub was a shadow of its former self and it remained boarded up for nearly four years before being bought by Fullers. Located in a fashionable, affluent area near Herne Hill station, The Half moon was a prime site for investment and the new owners dug very deep to bring this grand Victorian landmark back to life.
Revivalist were given an amazing opportunity to provide furniture and fixed seating to help restore its Grade-II listed heritage, contributing to a stripped back design scheme that celebrates the history of the venue throughout the bar, restaurant, garden and newly built, astronaut themed bedrooms.
New and vintage items were supplied throughout the pub starting with loose and fixed furniture for the cool industrial style garden and bared-walled beauty of the reclaimed Workshop outside dining area.
In the restaurant we added some metal with distinctive cast iron circular dining tables and bespoke half-moon style shelving housing a range of vases and planting that balance the aesthetic with a softer, organic feel.
In the bedrooms we added a dash of classical style with bespoke occasional furniture, a range of aniline leather desk chairs and one or two genuine vintage fittings
Some music fans may regret the change of emphasis from Regatta de Blanc to Pinot Noir but the pub’s rebirth has proved incredibly popular with the local community and visitors to London, providing Fullers with a successful template for future refurbishments in venues across the city.
The Half Moon has set a new standard, not just in Fuller’s – but for the wider industry, in how to sympathetically refurbish a historic pub. The Half Moon
has a history and heritage that deserves to be recognised and respected – and I truly believe we have succeeded in doing that”
